The Reactionizer

Is breaking news breaking us?

A guided practice for slowing down impulsive Twitter reactions.

Inside The ReactionizerTM you sit face to face with another human (scary!) to process your thoughts.

With so much breaking news, we’re shorting out. And to deal, we’ve gone tribal. Reacting quickly and sticking to our gut reactions, retweeting, heck yesing...whatever clears the slate fastest. But, what if we choose to focus, slow down, and take back control of how we respond?

Enter, The ReactionizerTM, brought to you by The Social Media Factory. Visitors were invited to sign up for a one on one session, select a trending conversation topic: Portland, Politics, or Pop Culture and enter the booth for their session.

The ReactionizerTM protocol encourages participants to react quickly, and then increasingly slowly to contemplate their reactions, consider other perspectives, and ultimately arrive at a more deeply considered reaction to their selected trending topic.

RESOURCES

This project was inspired in part by Jon Ronson’s book So You’ve Been Publically Shamed.

“The great thing about social media was how it gave a voice to voiceless people, but now we’re creating a surveillance society, where the smartest way to survive is to go back to being voiceless. Let’s not do that.”
- Jon Ronson, TED Global London Talk: When Online Shaming Goes Too Far
