The Reactionizer

BREAKING NEWS is breaking us!

And to deal, we’ve gone tribal. Reacting quickly and sticking to our gut reactions, retweeting, heck yesing...whatever clears the slate fastest. But, what if we choose to focus, slow down, and take back control of how we respond?

Enter, The Reactionizer, brought to you by The Social Media Factory. Visitors were invited to sign up and select a trending conversation topic: Portland, Politics, or Pop Culture.

The great thing about social media was how it gave a voice to voiceless people, but we’re now creating a surveillance society, where the smartest way to survive is to go back to being voiceless. Let’s not do that.

Commissioned by Design Week Portland 2018 for From A Whisper To Machines

This project was made in collaboration with Rebecca Gates.

Special thank you to The Social Media Factory’s employees Katie and Walton.

Inside The Reactionizer you sit face to face with another human (scary!).

The protocol encourages you to react quickly, and then increasingly slowly to arrive at a thoughtful reaction to your trending topic.
